Welcome to Sri Lanka
HE Mahinda Rajapaksa
President of Sri Lanka
I am delighted to welcome you to the Sri Lankan Portal of the Commonwealth of Nations website.
Sri Lanka or Ceylon as it was known earlier is a member of the Commonwealth. It is a popular destination for visitors from all parts of the globe. Our country has been blessed with some of the world's best beaches, most picturesque mountain valleys, waterfalls and rich biodiversity. It is the home of the 10 world heritage sites listed by UNESCO. Sri Lanka is a multi-ethnic society where four major religions co-exist in harmony. Sri Lanka's greatest attraction has been its friendly people who welcome visitors to the island with their warm traditional hospitality.
Sri Lanka is one of Asia's oldest democracies with a vibrant multi-party system and rich democratic traditions. It is making rapid economic progress. With a literacy rate of 93%, it has a skilled work force. Its commercial capital Colombo is becoming a hub port of the South Asia region. In view of these advantages, more investors are attracted to Sri Lanka. The abundance of well qualified intellectual workers has made Sri Lanka a leading destination for multinationals to outsource their professional services in the fields of accountancy, information technology, law and banking.
Sri Lanka has a diversified range of exports from apparels, traditional exports such as our world renowned tea, rubber products, gems and jewellery to computer software. With its business-friendly environment and developed human capital, Sri Lanka has much to offer to its friendly investors.
I invite you to visit us and experience the endless enchantment of Sri Lanka which has delighted visitors from time immemorial, who gave it several names such as "Taprobane", "Serendib", "Resplendent Isle" and "Pearl of the Indian Ocean".
My best wishes to all who visit the Commonwealth of Nations website.
