Ehlanzeni District Municipality
The 2-million hectare Kruger National Park is the magnet that attracts tourists to Ehlanzeni which borders on the western and southern reaches of this great wildlife wilderness. The popularity of this part of the Park has led to private investment in numerous luxury reserves and lodges. However, the Kruger is not the only attraction the District has to offer, blessed by Mother Nature herself Ehlanzeni boasts one of the greatest sceneries in South Africa and the world. The Ehlanzeni District Municipality is situated in the most eastern part of the Mpumalanga Province and has total area coverage of 27,895.47 square kilometres.
The District comprises the 5 local municipalities listed below:
Mbombela Local Municipality
Mbombela is a SiSwati term meaning "a lot of people together in a small space" and fittingly describes several areas within the Mbombela Local Municipality's area of jurisdiction. Nelspruit is the capital city of the Mpumalanga Province, one of the host cities for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and blessed with scenic beauty in the form of the Sudwala Caves.
Thaba Chweu Local Municipality
Thaba Chweu, a North Sotho word meaning "white mountain" in reference to the thick mists that often blanket the northern Drakensberg escarpment in this most majestic area within the District. This municipality boasts such scenic wonders as the Blyde River Canyon, God's Window view-site, Bourke's Luck Potholes, breathtaking waterfalls and quaint towns like Sabie, Graskop and Pilgrim's Rest.
Umjindi Local Municipality
Tucked away in the foothills of the Makhonjwa Mountains bordering Swaziland, Barberton the municipal capital, is home to South Africa's first gold mining industry started in 1884, which led to the establishment of the country's first stock exchange. Barberton is often called the jewel of Lowveld. This town is older than the city of Johannesburg and was founded in 1884 by Graham Barber, from Natal, who found what they called Barber's Reef - a reef so rich that it glittered with gold.
Nkomazi Local Municipality
Lying between Mozambique, Swaziland and the Kruger National Park, the Nkomazi valley is a narrow, green wedge of land often described as South Africa's most fertile region. This municipality is unique in that it has shared borders with two countries, Mananga and Jeppes Reef border gate to Swaziland and the Komatipoort border post to Mozambique.
Bushbuckridge Local Municipality
Located on the northern part of Ehlanzeni, Bushbuckridge is endowed with both private and state owned Wildlife Game Reserves, Agri-tourism activities, Eco-trails and Cultural Villages.
