Art and Culture
Mozambique has a diverse heritage and derives its rituals and customs from the different tribes and religions. The population consists of the nine ethnic tribes of which the Makua-Lomwe in the north is the largest. The other ethnic groups include Makonde, Yao and some tribes from the southern region such as Tsonga, Chopi, Karanga, Shona, and Nguni. Distinctive cultural heritage plays an important role among the various ethnic groups. The Chope, for example, are masters of the African piano, the mbila while Makonde are famous for their wood-carvings.

Music and dance are an integral part of their culture with heavy Portuguese influences. A very popular form of music is the Marrabenta which is a kind of dance music while other forms include Lusophone music like fado, samba, bossa nova and maxixe.

Portuguese is the official language. Many local African languages, such as Tsonga, Sena Nyanja, Makonde and Macua, are also spoken. The primary religion is Christianity (mainly Roman Catholic) followed by Islam and Hinduism while many also follow traditional beliefs. The native people have faith in animist beliefs and perform animist rituals.

Sports and Recreation
Football is the favourite sport while athletics and basketball are also avidly pursued. Popular recreational sports include scuba diving, snorkeling and deep-sea fishing. The country also provides opportunities for bird watching and game safaris due to its abundant wildlife and prolific birdlife.
