KENYA ANTI-CORRUPTION COMMISSION

In recognition of the problem of Corruption afflicting the country, the Kenya government took an early opportunity and was the first country in the world to sign and ratify the United Nations Convention against Corruption on 9th December 2003 in Merida, Mexico.

Establishment

The Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (KACC) was established under the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act of 2003 as the lead anti-corruption agency with the mandate to combat corruption and economic crime in Kenya through law enforcement, prevention and public education. KACC became operational in September 2004. Since then, it continues to lead nationally and regionally in fighting corruption and transnational crimes.

Achievements

In the four years of its existence, the Commission has achieved the following:

  • Conducted over 4,000 investigations into corruption including high profile cases involving government officials such as Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Members of Parliament and heads of state corporations;
  • Recovered corruptly acquired assets worth over four (4) billions of Kenya shillings.
  • Applied modern systems and techniques to investigate corruption.
  • Enhanced good corporate governance, sealed corruption loopholes and disrupted corruption networks in the public sector
  • Conducted diagnostic surveys and policy research on corruption, thus providing information applied in designing anti-corruption and governance interventions in the public sector.
  • Forged partnerships and collaborations with like minded institutions at the local, regional and international levels to share experiences and best practices in the fight against corruption and economic crime.
  • Provided good governance, integrity and ethics education and awareness to the public, civil society and private sectors. In addition, ethics training continues to be mainstreamed in learning institutions with a view to engineering behaviour change in society.

All these anti-corruption efforts are causing social, economic, political and cultural change in the management of public affairs.

Way forward

The Commission continues to widen and deepen its scope of engagement in the fulfillment of the Kenya Vision 2030 that aspires to make Kenya 'a globally competitive and prosperous nation providing the highest standard of living for her people.' To this end, the Commission will continue to enhance partnerships and collaborations at the local, regional and international levels in pursuit of its vision of becoming 'a world class institution fostering zero tolerance to corruption in Kenya and beyond'.
