A WORLD CLASS AFRICAN METROPOLIS

The choice of the Nairobi Metropolitan Region to be a world class African metropolis is essentially about carving a niche for the City, uniquely its own, while attracting trade, investment and tourism.

In response to the economic and social challenges facing the City and its environs, the Government of Kenya was prompted last year to create the Ministry of Nairobi Metropolitan Development to capitulate the Metro Region into a World Class African Metropolis.

COVERAGE
The Nairobi Metropolitan Region covers over 32,000 km² which includes the city core and 14 other surrounding independent Local Authorities. It has a population of over 6.3 million people.

MISSION
The Region is envisaged to be the best managed metropolis in Africa, providing a high quality of life to all its residents, visitors and investors.

MANDATE
The Ministry of Nairobi Metropolitan Development has been mandated to among others ensure "Preparation and Enforcement of an integrated spatial growth and development strategy and actualization of strategic programmes for the provision of social, economic and infrastructural services within the Region".

The Region is a desirable investment destination due to a number of key strengths which include:

  • The only city with two National Parks in the world
  • Excellent communication connectivity with major world- wide hubs.

  • The country's Mombasa Port has deep water supplying shipping needs to various countries
  • Its tourism industry is one of the most developed in the world
