The Catholic University of Eastern Africa
Marching Forward, Resolved and Committed!!
Congratulations to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and to the entire family of the Commonwealth for supporting higher education and the insight that Africa should be encouraged to generate home grown knowledge to solve Africa's problems, especially poverty.
The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) is the pioneer Catholic University in the whole region of Eastern and Southern Africa. It is therefore mandated to provide leadership for the upcoming institutions of higher learning of the region in reference. The achievement of this role shall be progressive, but we can confidently state that, since 1984 CUEA has been on the march moving forward with resolve and commitment.
In line with catholic tradition in higher education, CUEA is resolved to offer quality programmes to produce quality products.
CUEA was founded to respond to the needs of the young independent countries in Eastern Africa to provide well prepared, competent and upright leaders and to steer a value-oriented development agenda in the 20th Century. Now, at the beginning of the 21st Century, Africa has reached a new phase of political maturity and development. Poverty is a major concern in the midst of civil conflicts posing dangers to the survival of whole populations.
CUEA is committed to engage in research with community impact. The CUEA's primary reason to exist is service to the people. It must add value to people's lives. Our region is ravaged by extreme poverty. Therefore, this University has opted to be sensitive to the poor. Our community service activities mainly focus on the slums in Nairobi, orphanage homes, street children, HIV/AIDS victims and other less fortunate peoples. The graduates from CUEA are expected to go out with this spirit of concern and care for the disadvantaged in our communities.
In order to realize the mission of the University, to promote excellence in research, teaching and community service, the Strategic Development Plan (2002 - 2011) was adopted laying emphasis on constant review and evaluation of the existing academic programmes; enhancing capacity through the Staff Development programme; developing strong linkages with other institutions of higher learning; engaging a collegial style of leadership which favours fair representation of students and staff in the University administration; and diversifying the sources of funding with more attention to local initiatives. It is hoped that by the year 2008 a new Learning Resource Centre, to house the University Library, Information Communication Technology (ICT), Archives and a Museum, shall be completed. This centre shall be open to the communities around the University to serve as a utility for research, acquisition of knowledge for development and personal advancement.
In order to realize our vision, we are reaching out to the whole family of the Commonwealth to partner with us in the areas of academic collaboration, staff development, students and staff exchange, and research.
God bless the Commonwealth and long live Her Majesty the Queen!
