The Catholic University of Eastern Africa

Historical Note

The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) is a non-profit making private institution of higher learning, which started as Graduate School of Theology known as the Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa (CHIEA) in 1984. It was founded by the Association of Members Episcopal Conference of Eastern Africa (AMECEA). The latter is a regional organization of the Catholic Bishops of Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. In 1992 CHIEA was granted the Charter by the Government of Republic of Kenya and became the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).

At the time when the Charter was granted (1992), CUEA had two faculties namely: the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Since then, three other faculties have been launched namely: Commerce (2003) Science (2003) and Education (2005). The University also established the Departments of Research and CUEA Publications, and a Centre for Social Justice and Ethics. CUEA Publications produces two academic journals entitled: African Christian Studies (quarterly) and Eastern Africa Journal of Humanities and Science (bi-annual).

Mission Statement

Guided by the words of Jesus Christ: "Consecrate them in the truth" (Jn. 17:17), CUEA seeks to promote excellence in scientific research, quality teaching and community service for the purpose of promoting wholesome human dignity based on Christian morals as well as an integrated economic and social development in Africa.

CUEA is mandated to prepare qualified personnel of the labour market and upright leaders for the Church and Society. It also seeks to promote co-operation with other universities and institutions so as to make the world a better place to live in.

Ideals

The CUEA is guided by the philosophy of the Catholic Higher Education which emphasizes the search for the whole truth about nature, humanity and God.

CUEA aims at producing quality graduates, who are not only academically qualified but also socially and morally upright persons. In terms of research, the university seeks to have a community impact and creating an enabling environment for scholars. The guiding principles are (a) the search for integration of knowledge; (b) a dialogue between faith and reason; (c) an ethical concern; and (d) a theological perspective (Ex Corde Ecclesiae, No. 15)

The university seeks to promote the spirit of cooperation in a world that often promotes the spirit of individualism and unfair competition. It recognizes and nurtures solidarity as an African value in order to promote unity in diversity.

One core principle is to make university education available to the poor. This has not been fully achieved but it is a major concern in the university's policies and planning activities. So far the university has established a Scholarship pool from which students are awarded study bursaries annually.

Students

The students population gradually increased from the initial 22 in 1984 to over 3,500 in 2005. These students come from different countries of Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas. It reflects a diversity of nationality, culture and religion. CUEA is inclusive in the enrolments and records a gender rating of almost 50% female students.

Staff

In order to uphold the high academic standards, CUEA's policy is to recruit and employ high quality and motivated staff. A staff development policy provides for constant upgrading of knowledge and skills of staff through training programmes to cope up with the new technologies in research and teaching methods.

Constituent Colleges and Affiliated Schools

CUEA has three constituent colleges namely, Tangaza College, Marist International Centre and Hekima College. There are also three affiliated institutions namely, Chemchemi ya Uzima, Don Bosco College - Tanzania and Christ the King Major Seminary, Nyeri. Several applications for affiliation are being processed.

Certificate of Re-Inspection

In March 2005, CUEA became the first University in Kenya to be granted a Certificate of Re-Inspection. The Certificate was issued by the Commission for Higher Education, a quality assurance organ of the Ministry of Education of the Kenya government charged with certification, inspection and accreditation of universities in the Republic. The Commission for Higher Education, after a rigorous inspection exercise, affirmed that, "The University has continued to grow and provide quality education and training in accordance with the provisions spelt out in the Charter."

Strategic Plan

In order to achieve its objectives, the University launched a "Strategic Development plan 2002-2011" The aim of the ten year plan is to provide a framework to guide the University's expansion and growth. By 2011, the planned total student population will be 6,000. Several new programmes which are market-driven, but also carrying forward the wealth of humanities, will be progressively introduced. This will go hand in hand with the expansion of facilities to march the academic growth and student enrolments. A major undertaking of the Strategic Plan is the setting up of a new University Library, which will be the main component of a state-of-the-art Learning Resource Centre. The latter will be a high quality resource facility to support the achievement of excellence in learning, teaching and research, not only within the University, but also serve neighbouring institutions, schools and learning centres.
