Welcome to Barbados

Hon. David Thompson
Prime Minister of Barbados

On behalf of the Government and People of Barbados, I welcome you to the Barbados portal and invite you to learn more about this remarkable country we call home.

We in Barbados value highly our membership of the Commonwealth which dates back to immediately after our Independence in 1966. Since then we have benefited from technical assistance received in a range of development areas and vital information on good practice drawn from the 53 countries that make up the Commonwealth family of nations. We have been able to exchange ideas with a variety of countries at different stages of development.

Together with these countries we have subscribed to Commonwealth values in pursuit of common goals related to the promotion of democracy, human rights, good governance, the rule of law, individual liberty, egalitarianism, free trade, multilateralism, and world peace. In particular, we have drawn heavily on the principles of good governance made famous by the Commonwealth as preconditions for sustainable development and applied them to our social and political life.

Today Barbados is proud of its achievements and its high ranking as a leading developing country according to the United Nations Human Development Index. For decades its friendly people, its pleasant climate, and its beautiful environment have attracted visitors from Europe and America. It is now generally considered a good place to live, to relax, study or do business. For manufacturers and service providers the added attractions are its modern infrastructure and its proximity to the huge North American markets.

I therefore extend a warm invitation to you to explore our island home on the internet..... and one day to make it a reality by coming to visit us.
